SKILL DEVELOPMENT

Skill Development Initiatives At BEML

Skill development programmes in BEML Limited aim to hone the skills of the productive manpower, ensure optimum utilization of resources and also to skill the marginalized/unskilled manpower of the organization. Apart from such organizational requirements, various other skill development initiatives have also been undertaken to contribute towards ‘Skilling India’ in addition to apprenticeship training conducted to hone the skill/trade of students passing out of various ITIs/Polytechnics/Engineering Colleges.

To upgrade the skills, unskilled permanent employees are put on full time 18 months training in various trades and successful candidates are re-categorized & re-designated as direct workmen (technician) in respective disciplines. The contract workers engaged through service providers who perform menial jobs in spite of VIII/SSLC qualifications have also been put through three month in-house training and then engaged on direct jobs with increase in their daily wages and additional incentives. In addition, employees possessing skill in one particular trade and have an inclination and attitude to enhance their skills are identified for training in other trades so that their services can be optimally utilized.  This training helps in Job Rotation and to meet the urgent requirement/ commitments of particular specialized tradesmen.

Apprenticeship training under the Apprenticeship Act is imparted at Training Centres in the Complexes for skill development of ITI passed students in their respective trades and Engineering Diploma Holders and Engineering Graduates. The number of trade apprentices and diploma/graduate apprentices for the one year Trade Apprenticeship Training are as per quotas allotted by RDAT Hyderabad and  BOAT Chennai respectively and are maintained well over 10 % of the total manpower in the Company.

Service training programme for the customers from all over the country & abroad and for BEML Service personnel are conducted at Service Training Centres at KGF and at Mysore. For customer personnel, equipment-wise training programmes including operator training on Mining & Construction equipments are held while BEML service personnel are imparted training on dealer development in addition to training on mining and construction equipments.

In order to focus on building the requisite skills, which are of critical importance to the Company’s operations, various Centres of Excellence in Hydraulics & Structural Welding at KGF, Electrical & Electronics at Mysore and Stainless Steel welding & Electrical and Wire Harnessing at Bangalore have been set up. Presently these are being used only for in-house training and would be scaled up for outsiders after stabilizing and creating more infrastructure.

Company has adopted Govt. ITI at KGF and Govt. ITI at KM Dodi, Mandya as part of  skill development initiatives. Trainees of Govt ITI at KGF are being provided with 6 month practical training in KGF Complex while Mysore Complex is the industrial partner to ITI at KM Dodi and is being provided with assembly items etc.

As a part of the CSR initiatives, in 2013-14, one BL 9H  Loader equipment with  Tool kits and aggregates was provided to the training–cum Workshop Laboratory at the Centurion University, Bhubaneswar for skill development for the benefit of SC/ST and below poverty line youth in a naxal affected tribal and poorest district of Odisha. In addition to various assemblies being provided to adopted ITIs, 17 machineries have been donated to 5 ITIs as per their requirement. More equipments are being reconditioned for donation to ITIs.

To enhance the capability of the Engineers working in Production, R&D and allied areas, a tie-up was established with IIT-Madras and IIT- Kharagpur.  Having a permanent BEML facility at IIT-M Technology Park for utilizing R&D facilities of IIT-M is also under consideration. Tie up with Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru (IISc) and National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad (NID) for Engineering Consultancy Services are being explored.

Company also provides internships to engineering graduates in their final year on no-pay no- fees basis for two to three months.
