What is GIS:
GIS is an organized collection of computer hardware, software, geographical data and customized design to efficiently capture, store, update, manipulate, analyze and display all forms of geographical reference and information.
GIS essentially composed of two components Software tools and Database. The database of a GIS stores all information pertaining to a map from which different views or projection can be drawn from time to time to meet specific requirements and it links spatial data with geographic information about any particular feature on map.
Applications in Electrical Utilities:
State electrical utilities like OPTCL can be benefitted majorly through the integration of the following modules as follows:
Integration with eShakti:
The ERP system is an online transaction processing system and supports operational management of the Organisation. Data generated out these transactions is held in the data repository of the ERP and can be integrated with spatial data of GIS system for better comprehension of the given context in terms of visualisation.
GIS Benefits:
Following are the benefits from GIS: 1. The entire transmission network will be available digitally. 2. Consistency will be maintained if all data are maintained centrally. 3. It is step towards improvement and further benefits in Asset management, outage management, network operation, planning and expansion studies. 4. Ability to review any outages / overhaul / shutdown being planned, and the maintainance work planned to be performed during a particular period.
