Indian Port Rail Corporation Ltd., (IPRCL) was formed in July 2015 after Cabinet approval to stimulate overall growth of port sector and contribute to economic growth of country. This is a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) under the Ministry of Shipping as a joint venture company between the 11 Major Ports under Ministry of Shipping and Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), under the Companies Act 2013.

Mandate of the Company is to undertake projects for last mile connectivity to Major Ports, and for Non-major ports (if viable), modernization of the rail infrastructure at ports (Major), operate and manage the internal port railway system.

IPRCL will also leverage the extant participative model of IR to enhance last mile connectivity as well as enhancement of capacity in embedded hinterland connectivity, raise financial resources for funding, assess intermodal gaps in handling rail cargo of Major Ports and develop suitable solutions to enable seamless flow of Cargo. IPRCL will also be taking up Critical Road Connectivity Projects wherever feasible.

The key area of work of IPRCL involves creation and maintenance of Railway infrastructure and assets. Several components of the Company’s mandate require specialized knowledge and skill sets in the area of Railway design, planning, engineering, construction, maintenance and operation. The Company proposes to undertake operation & maintenance of rail infrastructure in various ports in phased manner, to improve efficiency of rail operation in various major ports. Presently IPRCL is undertaking 25 Rail Infrastructure and Rail-Port Linking Projects at Various Major Ports in India, costing about 6000 Crores.

IPRCL is committed to Technology Up-gradation, Innovation and adopting best Project Management Practices to execute the Rail Infra Projects at and in connection with Major Ports of India as well as to boost up the revenue of Indian Railways by increasing the rail co-efficient (Share of rail transportation). IPRCL is also committed to provide best possible Rail Infrastructure Services for optimizing the commercial development of all Major Ports in India by ensuring the provision of infrastructural, technological and human resources necessary for the profitable pursuit of port and marine-related activities.
